Explore the augmented intelligence era with Eudia’s podcast—unlocking the future of legal work and the potential of advanced AI.
Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the legal profession, collaborating with over one hundred Chief Legal Officers and Fortune 500 legal departments. During that time, I’ve watched the industry prepare for what has long been anticipated as an existential transformation.
That inflection point has now arrived.
Chief Legal Officers operate within an inherent paradox: they must move at the speed of the business while ensuring the enterprise remains protected. Move too slowly, and legal becomes a bottleneck to growth. Move too quickly, and the organization is exposed to risk.
Over the last decade, an explosion of legal technology attempted to resolve this tension. Yet despite significant investment, these solutions have largely failed to deliver meaningful impact—leaving many CLOs disappointed and increasingly skeptical of new tools.
As a result, we are now witnessing the end of the traditional software era.
At the same time, rapid advances in generative AI and the emergence of agentic systems have expanded what is possible. For the first time, even the most risk-conscious legal departments can begin to operate differently—not just more efficiently, but more strategically.
The promise of full legal automation is compelling. But the reality is more complex.
Legal work demands near-perfect accuracy—an expectation current generative AI alone cannot consistently meet. Today’s AI landscape introduces real risks: hallucinations, privacy vulnerabilities, security concerns, and intellectual property challenges.
The opportunity in this new era is not simply to layer AI onto existing tools, but to rethink legal workflows from first principles—reimagining how human expertise and intelligent systems work together to drive real business impact.
The Augmented Intelligence Era
The more effective path forward for in-house legal teams is not the wholesale replacement of legal expertise, but the strategic augmentation of human judgment through intelligence-driven systems.
By viewing AI not as a substitute for legal professionals, but as a force multiplier—one that enhances judgment, creativity, and efficiency—legal departments can unlock unprecedented potential.
Over the past 18 months, my team and I have worked closely with some of the most visionary Chief Legal Officers from Fortune 500 companies to bring their aspirations for the future of legal operations to life.
Through collaborations with iconic leaders such as Rob Beard, Chief Legal Officer of Coherent, Mark Smolik, Chief Legal Officer of DHL Supply Chain Americas, and Rishi Varma, Chief Legal and Compliance Officer at Cargill, and others, we have gained a deep understanding of the persistent gaps in existing legal technology, the structural challenges that hinder progress, and, most importantly, what an augmented intelligence-driven legal function should look like for in-house teams in this new era.
The blueprint for Augmented Intelligence has now been established, and we are seeing tremendous results. Developing this blueprint has required a deep partnership with our customers, and it is now ready to scale.
We call it Eudia.
Introducing Eudia
Today, I am proud to announce that Eudia has secured up to $105 million in Series A funding, led by our partners at General Catalyst.
The name Eudia is inspired by Aristotle’s concept of eudaimonia—the highest form of human flourishing, pursued as an end in itself rather than as a means to something else.
Through my work with Chief Legal Officers, I have come to appreciate them not merely as legal experts, but as business leaders with a deep understanding of the law. With Augmented Intelligence, legal teams can likewise unlock their full potential.
What does unlimited potential mean in this context?
It means shifting from constraining growth to enabling it, from minimizing risk to strategically managing it, and from relying on large teams to compensate for underperforming software to embracing AI-powered systems that propel the business forward.
With Eudia, legal teams can achieve a level of strategic partnership with the business that was previously unimaginable.
But don’t just take my word for it—hear directly from the co-architects of the Augmented Intelligence movement and their vision for the future of the legal industry:
“Eudia has proven to solve previously intractable problems for every Chief Legal Officer. The team and its Augmented Intelligence platform have earned my trust over the past 18 months, and we are on track to transform into a fully augmented legal team this year thanks to Eudia's Augmented AI Agents.”
— Rob Beard, Chief Legal Officer, Coherent
“As a team, we spend a great deal of time evaluating and implementing new and creative ways to drive innovation in our department. Of the many tools we've evaluated, Eudia stands out as highly differentiated, building AI agents designed for the real needs of corporate legal departments. The team has earned my trust with every interaction, and I’m thrilled to have access to Eudia’s Augmented Intelligence Platform.”
— Mark Smolik, Chief Legal Officer, DHL Supply Chain Americas
The inefficiencies of the legal system extend far beyond business—one legal event can bankrupt the average American.
Despite the unprecedented capabilities of AI agents to automate legal work, the status quo remains deeply flawed. By demonstrating that many—if not most—legal tasks can be meaningfully augmented by AI, we have the opportunity to fundamentally reshape the industry.
Our goal is not just to improve efficiency, but to level the playing field—making legal resources more accessible and enabling businesses to scale faster than ever before.
By transforming legal from a cost center into a strategic value driver, we are unlocking a new era of growth and impact.
